DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr. Francesco Baino Politecnico di Torino\, Italy
“Towards more functional and truly “bone-like” scaffolds using b
ioactive glasses and ceramics” Porous implantable scaffolds act as t
emplates to allow tissue growth and regeneration in 3D. Bone regenerat
ion can depend on both the scaffold architecture and the inherent char
acteristics of the biomaterials used. In this regard\, extra-functiona
lities can also be achieved: for example\, using mesoporous materials
allow combining bioactivity with drug release from the nanopores. With
regard to the porous architecture of scaffolds\, structural biomimicr
y is a commonly-followed criterion in order to replicate the peculiar
characteristics of cancellous bone. This is a particularly difficult t
ask when bioactive ceramics and glasses are used for osseous applicati
ons due to some challenges related to materials processing (e.g. repro
 ducibility\, reliability\, need for high-temperature sintering etc.).
Recent progresses in the advanced manufacturing of bioceramics have al
lowed researchers to overcome some of these limitations. The first par
t of this seminar provides an overview of the fabrication methods for
producing porous bioactive glasses/ceramics\, while the second part is
addressed to the latest research studies carried out in the GLANCE gr
oup at PoliTO with focus on the additive manufacturing and advanced ch
 aracterization of scaffolds. Zoom: meeting-ID: 691 5465 0178 or zoom c
